“Napalm Girl,” one of the most well-known photos taken by Vietnamese photographer Nick Ut during the war in Vietnam, was sold for VND250 million (US$11,750) at an auction in Ho Chi Minh City this week.

This is among Nick Ut’s five photos which were purchased at an auction to raise funds for poor, homeless children and supporting heart surgery for children.

Nick Ut’s famous photo, “Napalm Girl,” features a naked girl, 9-year-old Phan Thi Kim Phuc, running toward the camera after a napalm attack in Tay Ninh Province on June 8, 1972.

It is one of the most powerful photos that depict the brutality of the war in Vietnam. In 1973, the photo won the Pulitzer Prize for Spot News Photography.

The picture was sold on Monday to a Vietnamese businessman and includes the signature of Phuc, the main character, who now lives in Canada with her husband and children.

“My favorite artwork is the ‘Napalm Girl’ photo as it was created in an extraordinary circumstance and is also the most emotional image that I have ever captured,” Nick Ut spoke at the event.

Nick Ut, also known as Huynh Cong Ut, was born in Vietnam in 1951 and started working for the Associated Press at the age of 18 to replace his brother Huynh Thanh My, who died while working for the news agency as a war correspondent.
