The Vietnamese national tennis team that attended the Asia/Oceania Zone Group 3 of the Davis Cup in the United Arab Emirates last week will be awarded US$10,000 for winning a promotion to play in Group 2 next year.
This marks the first such event in the history of tennis in Vietnam, said Nguyen Quoc Ky, general secretary of the Vietnam Tennis Federation.
The team, consisting of Do Minh Quan, Le Quoc Khanh, Nguyen Hoang Thien, Pham Minh Tuan, and Tran Hoang Anh Khoa, Australian coach Michael Baroch and team chief Truong Quoc Bao competed in Group 3 with the UAE, Iran, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Oman, Malaysia, and Pacific Oceania.
Vietnam and Hong Kong won the two promotion tickets. Vietnam defeated Hong Kong 2-1.
In the first game, Nguyen Hoang Thien lost 3-6 6-3 1-6 to Ognian Kolev before Pham Minh Tuan leveled it 1-1 after beating King Phillip. Tuan defeated Phillip 6-2 in the first set before the Chinese player withdrew due to injury.
In the decisive men’s doubles game, Le Quoc Khanh / Do Minh Quan beat Li Hei Yin / Lam Siu Chuen 6-1 6-3.
