An album jointly produced by young artist Ngo Hong Quang and Dutch composer Onno Krijn and a work by Vietnamese French composer Nguyen Thien Dao, which both highlight Vietnamese traditional music, are recently released.

Quang’s CD titled “Song hanh” (Going abreast), which  has been sold out in the Netherlands, has recently been released at home.

The CD features 13 works in “cheo” (traditional northern music and performance), “xam” (the northern region’s folk music, typically performed by street artists for a living), Hue and southern folk songs as well as two of Quang’s own pieces.

The music in the CD is arranged and fused with electronic music by foreign artists, and Quang said he will adopt the blend in his later music career.

Quang, 33, who collaborated with Dutch composer Krijn on this CD during his study in the Netherlands, hopes to further promote his country’s enthralling traditional music to the world.

In the similar vein, Vietnamese French composer Nguyen Thien Dao, who is enlisted in the “Le Petit Larousse”, also released “Tien Du” (The chance meeting with a fairy), a 25-minute traditional music work.

Dao worked on the piece for more than one year on the order placed by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism. The piece will be performed during the Vietnam Year in France in Feb 2014.

“I’ve never ceased studying Vietnamese traditional music. A variety of these, including ‘ca tru’ (northern ceremonial singing), ‘chau van’ (traditional northern spiritual singing) and poem reciting among others will be found in ‘Tien Du’. As for me, a piece is successful to a certain extent only if it is expressive of the country’s heroism and poetic quality,” the 73-year-old composer shared.

He also released a CD titled “Dat troi” (The universe), which features six works for traditional instruments, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Vietnamese-French diplomatic ties.

“Suoi Tranh” (The picturesque spring), one of the six pieces in the CD, has been selected to be among the works which will be analyzed in a composition competition in France. The competition, which runs from Nov 2013 to April 2014, attracts some 3,000 French students.

Dao is a revered contemporary classical music composer and an eminent researcher in Vietnamese traditional music. His works, including several pieces which accentuate Vietnamese folk music, have been performed in France, Vietnam and in several other countries.
