Nguyen Thanh Trung, former player of Saigon Xuan Thanh football club, Wednesday received a five-year suspension from all football-related activities for attempting to arrange a match-fixing. On May 12, Trung, now working at the military-run Quan Khu 9 Sport Center in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho, lured two Dong Tam Long An players, Vo Nhat Tan and Nguyen Thanh Hai, to fix the match between their club and Cement Fico Tay Ninh at the 17th round of the First Division five days later. Tan however reported the invitation to the club superiors, who later called on the Vietnam Professional Football (VPF), which manages the country’s football leagues, and police to probe into the case. Police have acquired a recorded tape of a conversation between Trung and the said players, but concluded that as Trung’s attempt to entice the match-fixing failed, he would not be prosecuted for criminal violations, a VPF top official told Tuoi Tre. The player thus only received penalty from the Vietnam Football Federation, the national football governing body. Trung is allowed to lodge a petition against the suspension within the next seven days, VFF said.
