A Vietnamese university professor will deliver a presentation on ‘ao dai,’ considered the traditional Vietnamese gown, at a university in the U.S. later this month.

The University of Findlay – based in Ohio – said last week on its website that Phuong Vu, a member of the Faculty of English Linguistics and Literature at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, will discuss and analyze the form, styles, and symbolic and contemporary meanings of ‘ao dai’ on October 23 on its campus.

Vu will also provide historical perspective on this outfit as it related to the Southeast Asian country’s royal family during the feudal period, and represented female intellectuals and other professionals during the French colonial era, the American university added.

Vu studied at New York University as a Fulbright scholarship student from 2011 to 2013.

The Fulbright program is administered by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs and grants scholarships for international students and scholars, according to the program’s website.

Vu previously received a bachelor’s degree in English linguistics and literature from the Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities, where she was in the honors program.

She has extensive teaching and research experience from work conducted in the United States, Australia, and her home country.

The faculty exchange program between the Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities and the University of Findlay began in 2006 with a grant from the Vermont-based private and philanthropic Freeman Foundation and ASIANetwork, a consortium of approximately 160 North American colleges.

After the grant project was completed, the two institutions signed an agreement to continue the faculty exchange.

A total of 14 faculty and staff have been exchanged between the two schools so far.

The presentation on ‘ao dai’ will take place at 7:00 pm on October 23 in Room 102 of the Davis Building, 300 Davis Street.

The event is free and open to the public.
