While the city is going to sleep, a number of workers start their working “day” in Ho Chi Minh City.
They are road, cable, and plumbing repairmen who always begin a working “day” at night when people are about to go to bed, and call it a day when people wake up.
At 10:00 pm one day, a group including more than 40 workers gathered on No Trang Long Street in Binh Thanh District to install underground electric cables.
The group, divided into smaller teams for digging under the street and installing cables, did their job in a hurry because they had to get the road back to its original condition before 5:00 am.
Le Van Loi, 35, from the southern province of Tien Giang, has 21 years of experience in doing this night job.
He said the workers are mainly poor laborers from central and southern provinces who come to Ho Chi Minh City to earn a living.
As the Lunar New Year (Tet) is approaching, the men are working harder to earn more money to go back to their hometown for family reunions.
Tet is Vietnam’s biggest holiday, when everyone gets together with their family after a year of working or studying away from each other.
It falls on February 19 this year, with festive preparations beginning a week before that and the celebratory atmosphere lingering another week after it.
Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper gives you a look at these workers’ normal working “day”:
