Police reject Vietnamese American’s allegation against tabloid calling her ‘nymphomaniac’

Police reject Vietnamese American’s allegation against tabloid calling her ‘nymphomaniac’

Police in northern Vietnam have refuted an accusation by a Vietnamese-American woman against a Vietnamese tabloid for allegedly fabricating stories that she raped many taxi drivers – one of whom was said to be forced to have sex with her over 30 times in two days – last year.

>> Lawyer warns Vietnamese American may sue tabloid for libel Pham Thi Thanh Ngoc, 40, has accused Nguoi Dua Tin (Informant) newspaper of publishing on its website a number of articles with made-up contents that seriously affected her reputation and prestige.  Ngoc has also proposed police in Hai Duong, the province where Nguoi Dua Tin reported a “nymphomaniac” raped many taxi drivers, charge the newspaper with “slander” under Article 122 of the Penal Code. Additionally, the Vietnamese-American woman alleged that a number of taxi drivers of Mai Linh Taxi Company had provided Nguoi Dua Tin with untrue information which the newspaper used to write their false stories.   However, the police replied to Ngoc on April 18 that the “nymphomaniac” mentioned in Nguoi Dua Tin’s articles did not refer to any particular woman residing at any specific address, so there is no ground to conclude that the newspaper’s reporters tainted the honor, human dignity or reputation of anyone. In other words, the police said, there are no signs of slander in such articles. The newspaper published a series of articles telling of a woman, referred to only as N., who reportedly raped many taxi drivers in Hai Duong in 2013.   The paper called N. a “nymphomaniac” and claimed that one of the victims was locked in her house for two days and forced to have sex with the woman more than 30 times. It added in two reports published on December 26 and 28 that N. luring “80-90 percent of Hai Duong taxi drivers” into her private home in the province, drugging the men with aphrodisiacs, and raping them. Ngoc has insisted that she was alluded to in these articles as N.Pursuing the lawsuit After receiving the police’s reply, Ngoc told Tuoi Tre that she did not agree with their arguments and that she will continue taking legal action against Nguoi Dua Tin. “Obviously, Nguoi Dua Tin intentionally released these articles to damage my honor and dignity, and I have suffered a lot from the slandering articles, so I do not agree with the police’s explanation. I will continue to bring the newspaper to court.” Earlier on April 3, Ngoc told Tuoi Tre that she had filed a complaint to the Hanoi People’s Court against Nguoi Dua Tin, headquartered in the capital, for the same reason.  In her complaint, Ngoc demanded the paper compensate her with VND360 million (US$17,000) for the travel expenses and costs of food and accommodation she have had to cover so far to deal with the aftermath of the purportedly fabricated stories.

She also requested Nguoi Dua Tin to correct all the articles and made public apologies to her.
