Phase 2 is aimed at properly treating the household wastewater in the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe area and District 2 before discharging it into the environment. Accordingly, a Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe wastewater treatment plant, with capacity of 480,000 cubic meters of wastewater per day, will be built in District 2. The phase also includes the construction of a large sewer system, which is eight kilometers long and has a diameter of 3.2 m to transmit wastewater from the two above areas to the wastewater treatment plant. Upon completion in 2020, the new infrastructure will help improve and enhance the health of people in the city, and restore and conserve the ecological system of the Saigon River and the downstream area of the Dong Nai River. Earlier, the project’s phase 1, which covers the basin of the Nhieu Loc-Thi Nghe canal, was completed in August 2012, with an investment of more than $300 million, according to sources from the WB. During the phase, a sewer system with a length of 9 km and a diameter of 2.5-3 meters, 36 wells, a pumping station with capacity of 64,000 cubic meters of water per hour, and 59 relevant devices were made available. In addition, a 16-km long embankment system was built and 16 bridges along the canal, which runs about eight kilometers through seven districts in the city -- including Districts 1, 3 and 10 and Phu Nhuan, Tan Binh, Go Vap and Binh Thanh Districts -- were consolidated. More than 7,000 households with nearly 50,000 people have been relocated during the phase.
