President of the Republic of Korea (RoK) Park Geun Hye arrived in Hanoi last Saturday, starting her five-day visit to Vietnam at the invitation of her Vietnamese counterpart Truong Tan Sang. This is her first visit to Vietnam since she took office in February this year, and the fifth one by a RoK President since the two nations established diplomatic relations in 1992. The Korean leader is expected to hold talks with President Truong Tan Sang and have meetings with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, PM Nguyen Tan Dung and National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung. Over the past two decades, the two countries have seen their bilateral trade grow 44 times, investment rise 250 times and human resources exchange 80 times, the President continued, adding that Vietnam is the RoK’s largest ODA recipient.

The RoK committed to supply Vietnam with US$1.2 billion from its Economic Development Cooperation Fund in the 2012-2015 period, up $200 million against the 2008-2011 period. The RoK also has the second highest number of citizens travelling to Vietnam. In the first seven months of this year, 439,100 came, a 4.3 percent increase from the same period last year. There are about 500,000 Vietnamese guest workers in the RoK and 50,000 Vietnamese-RoK families are living in the country. Cooperation among localities in both countries has been expanded with cooperative relations set up between Hanoi and Seoul, Da Nang and Deagu, and Ho Chi Minh City and Bussan city. In an interview with the Vietnam News Agency, the RoK leader said that her country aims to forge a closer relationship with Vietnam in the near future, raising bilateral ties to their highest level since diplomatic links were first established in 1992. The RoK government will expand the scope of strategic cooperation and mutual benefit between the two countries in new fields, such as the environment and climate change, energy security, information and communications and biotechnology to develop their partnership in a sustainable manner, she said.

Expressing her expectation that the two sides will strengthen cooperation in the international arena, she said, “I hope that our two countries will develop close partnership to deal with issues facing Asia’s peace and prosperity and the international community.”

The Rok President said she chose Vietnam to be the first leg of her tour of ASEAN as her country has always had good relations with Vietnam and is determined to further develop them. “It is time we prepared for the next 20 years and promote our economic ties intensively and extensively.”
