Politics

-- General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong on November 4 welcomed President of Iceland Ólafur Ragnar Grímsson in Hanoi on his visit to Vietnam. At their meeting, General Secretary Trong highlighted that the two countries have had positive development, as well as expressed his hope to strengthen cooperation in trade - investment, education - training, energy and environmental issues.

-- French Navy’s Le Vendemiaire cruiser on Wednesday morning arrived at the Tien Sa port in the central Vietnamese city of Da Nang, kicking off its visit to Vietnam from November 4 to 9.

Society

-- The Steering Committee on Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue of the south-central province of Khanh Hoa on November 4 said downpours lasting five days from October 31 killed six people, including four students, and inundated hundreds of locals houses.

-- Police from the Tan Son Nhat Border Gate Customs Department on November 4 said they had arrested a Malaysian woman for illegally transporting narcotics. Kaur Gurcharan Singh Manpal, 44, was captured after more than 5kg of cocaine hidden in 16 packages were found in her luggage.

Business

-- Leading French retail group Auchan has recently signed an agreement on strategic cooperation with Vietnamese Military Petrochemical Joint Stock Company to open the retail chain Simly Mart in northern Vietnam. The first Simly Mart is slated to be put into operation from 2016 and a target of opening 20 such outlets is expected to be achieved in 2020.

-- The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has established a supervisory department in order to improve the quality of local airports’ service. The department will be responsible for looking over many activities at the airports, including monitoring delayed or canceled flights and timely asking carriers to fulfill their responsibilities to passengers. 

Education

-- The Vietnamese-German University on November 4 awarded degrees to 43 bachelor’s and master’s graduates at its campus in the southern province of Binh Duong.  

Lifestyle

-- A recent survey shows that young Vietnamese aged 18 to 30 are not interested in reading, with only 15 percent saying they read when they have free time and 41.7 percent choosing to surf the Internet.

-- Around 100,000 old books will be displayed and sold at a festival in Ho Chi Minh City from November 6 to 8. Talks with writers and an auction of rare books will also be held at the event at the Youth Culture House in District 1.
