Police in Vietnam last year uncovered 261 criminal cases using advanced technology that caused total damage of about US$96.15 million, the Vietnamese Ministry of Public Security said.

>> Vietnam holds 8 who stole credit card info to filch $300 mln >> 12 sentenced for trafficking women to China>> ASEAN to boost fighting transnational crimes The ministry released the figures at the 13th ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Transnational Crime (SOMTC) that began in central Da Nang city on June 18, focusing on cyber crimes, human trafficking, money laundering, environmental crimes, weapon trafficking, terrorism and other issues, said Lieutenant General Le Quy Vuong, Vietnamese Deputy Minister of Public Security. Nowadays high tech criminal gangs often target victims in the fields of finance, banking, securities, consultancy, gold trade and others in Vietnam, the ministry reported. Since 2012, the country’s computer network security has faced an alarming situation in which many attacks have occurred and caused considerable damage.  Last year, police busted a total of 261 lawbreaking cases using advanced technology that caused total damage of over VND2,000 billion, or US$96.15 million. Recently, after a two-year investigation in cooperation with US and UK police, Vietnamese police seized eight members of a transnational criminal ring that stole credit card information and e-commerce information to appropriate hundreds of millions of dollars from their victims in many countries. Five of the eight criminals were arrested in Ho Chi Minh City, while the rest were seized in Hanoi on May 31.  Among the criminals was 24-year-old Vietnamese Truong Hai Duy, of southern Hau Giang Province, the ministry said. With respect to human trafficking, the selling of women and girls to foreign countries, including China, for prostitution, has increased alarmingly in Vietnam, the ministry said. Last year, police discovered 528 human trafficking cases involving 914 offenders and released 1,041 victims.

One of the most recent trials for human traffickers was conducted on June 17 by the southern Tay Ninh Province People’s Court, which gave sentences from three to 14 years in jail for 12 defendants who sold Vietnamese women to China as potential wives for Chinese men.
