A Vietnamese man has taken his own life after killing three members of a family over a land dispute, police said on Sunday.

Three family members had been slashed to death in the northern province of Dien Bien, Major General Sung A Hong, director of the provincial Department of Police, confirmed to Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper.

Police in Muong Cha District were notified of the deaths on Saturday, Hong said, adding that Sung A Tho, a 31-year-old man in Ma Lu Thang Hamlet, was then identified as the suspect.

Officers’ preliminary probe showed that Tho had murdered the three family members with a knife over a farming land dispute, including Sung Sai Do, 67, his 66-year-old wife Vu Thi Do, and their son Sung A Ho, 16.

The suspect fled his hamlet after the murder, according to the probe.

Major General Hong said police officers had found Tho unconscious on Sunday afternoon in another hamlet of Muong Cha.

The suspect was immediately hospitalized but emergency care could not save his life then.

Police believed Tho had eaten la ngon, a poisonous leaf, to kill himself on the loose.

Local authorities have given the relatives of the three family members VND10 million (US$442) worth of support.
