Vietnam Airlines delays 22 flights as powerful typhoon Rammasun nears

Vietnam Airlines delays 22 flights as powerful typhoon Rammasun nears

Friday, July 18, 2014, 11:18 GMT+7

As many as 22 flights operated by national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines were forced Thursday to take off later than scheduled due to the foul weather that followed the strong typhoon Rammasun, the airline reported late the same day.

Vietnam Airlines said it had to delay 16 domestic and international flights to and from Hanoi thanks to the heavy downpour and lightning caused by Rammasun, which means God of Thunder in Thai.

The affected services included 13 domestic flights connecting the Vietnamese capital city and Ho Chi Minh City, Dien Bien, Pleiku and Dong Hoi, as well as three international flights to Moscow, Shanghai, and Vientiane.

The delayed flights also affected the flying plans of six other services, between Ho Chi Minh City and Dong Hoi, Hanoi and Dien Bien, and Vientiane and Ho Chi Minh City.

These 22 flights were each delayed 35 minutes to an hour and a half, and more than 3,000 passengers failed to arrive at their desired destination on time over the incident.

Super typhoon Rammasun entered the East Vietnam Sea on Wednesday afternoon after hitting the Philippines, forcing an evacuation of 370,000 people and leaving at least 27 dead, the Vietnam National Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting Center reported on Thursday.

The super typhoon is forecast to batter the sea area in the Gulf of Tonkin and northern Vietnamese provinces on Friday and Saturday.
