Man wields hammers, locks self in hotel for hours

In a baffling incident, a man was arrested this morning after hiding for 4 hours inside a hotel in Ho Chi Minh City. He apparently did nothing wrong other than holding two hammers and locking himself in his room.

It occurred at Hoang Nam Huong Hotel on Phan Van Tri street, Go Vap district.

According to a receptionist, at 6:30pm Thursday, two middle-aged men (identities not yet known) holding a large bag checked into room number 21 on the first floor.

This morning, one of them checked out. At 8am, the remaining man walked out of the room and with his hands holding two hammers, sat down near the staircase leading to the lobby floor.

It is not clear why he did this but he reportedly did not threaten nor attempt any attack. However, staff at the reception desk got panicky and took all money and rushed outside, calling the police.

After the police arrived 20 minutes later, the mysterious man locked himself in his hotel room. As police tried to open the door to talk to him, he vehemently threw hard objects at them.

At 11:45, he was finally subdued. Although many police surrounded him, the man struggled hard, wildly thrashing about trying to escape.

Over 40 police officers were present.

The hotel’s owner has refused to answer Tuoi Tre’s questions.
