Film producer denies accusation of appropriating property

Film producer denies accusation of appropriating property

Wednesday, October 10, 2012, 17:38 GMT+7

Local film producer Phuoc Sang, who has been accused of appropriating VND3 billion (US$143,000) and a Mercedes car from a man named Chung Minh, officially announced at a press meeting today that he “does not default any debt or cheat anybody.”

Sang has reportedly borrowed VND2.4 billion and $25,000 as well as a four-seat Mercedes S350 car with number plate 51A-127.02 from Chung, and hadn’t returned yet, the borrower told Tuoi Tre in an interview last week.

When asked to return the property, Sang said he “left the car at a pawnshop,” said Chung, who has lodged an accusation letter to Binh An Ward Police in Ho Chi Minh City’s District 2, where the producer resides.

The incident has caused a stir over the last week, and Phuoc Sang finally showed up to provide explanations.

The producer admitted that he borrowed the car from Minh for his personal business in mid-May, and asked a friend to return the car to Minh.

“But I couldn’t know that my friend didn’t do so,” he told reporters. “I have looked for him and the car but couldn’t find him.”

The friend, however, turned up through his own initiative after the case was widely reported on local media, the producer added.

Sang thus asserted that he returned the car to Minh on October 7, while refusing to reveal the name of his friend, saying he wants to protect him.

“I thought Minh will tolerate, given our long-standing friendship, if I told him the car was left in a pawnshop.”

Actor Quyen Linh, who also attended to meeting, said Sang can’t take every responsibility, while pointing the name of the person in question.

“He is film director Lam Quang Teo,” said Linh.

Teo, who is also a scriptwriter, also attended the meeting to apologize to Phuoc Sang.

“I’m really upset for hurting Sang who I consider my little brother. I want to say sorry to Phuoc Sang,” Teo said.

As for the VND3 billion debt, Sang explained that the money is Minh’s contribution to his film project titled “Yeu Anh! Em Dam Khong” (Love Me! Do You Dare?) for Tet 2013.

“However, as there are some disagreements between Minh’s perspective of art and mine, he decided to withdraw his money,” Sang added.

Due to his financial difficulties at that time, Sang couldn’t give Minh the amount of money. “I negotiated and paid VND300 million in advance. The remaining will be cleared later. We made the deal based on our trust without signing any papers.”

In concluding the meeting, Sang told the media that he has closed a new deal with Minh on the remaining money, but refused to reveal the date when he have to clear the payment.

He also presented many documents of his real estate assets to prove his financial ability to settle the debt.
