US magazine names Vietnam among best countries for solo travelers

Vietnam has been listed among the best countries for solo travelers by New York-based travel magazine Travel + Leisure.

The list was created based on two concerns for people when they travel alone, namely safety and if the destination is a happy place, the magazine said in its September issue.

“To find the answer to these two questions, we crunched the numbers from the Global Peace Index, which ranks 162 nations for their peacefulness, and the Happy Planet Index, which looks at environmental impact and human well-being in 151 countries to measure where people live long and happy lives,” Travel + Leisure said.

“The resulting 20 best destinations for solo travelers present an amazing mash-up of geography along with radically different cultures, languages, and customs.”

The Southeast Asian country is described as one of the “safest, friendliest countries" for "solo adventure” by the magazine. Vietnam was ranked 45th in the Global Peace Index 2014, and 2nd in the Happy Planet Index report in 2012.

“Street life is colorful and safe in Vietnam’s largest cities, whether you’re exploring Ben Thanh Market in Ho Chi Minh City or heading for Hanoi’s massive Dong Xuan Market,” Travel + Leisure said about the country.

“Wind up with a stay on Phu Quoc Island for a taste of the classic Southeast Asian beach bum lifestyle,” it added.

Some of the other best countries for solo travelers as selected by the magazine include the United Kingdom, Iceland, Panama, Argentina, Germany, Indonesia, Chile, Austria, New Zealand, and Switzerland.
