Politics

-- Vietnam’s Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong thanked the UN for their valuable support to Vietnam, especially in dealing with the war consequences, as he met United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon in the UN headquarters in New York on July 10 (local time). The UN leader praised Vietnam for its vanguard role in fulfilling the UN development goals and joining UN peacekeeping activities.

Society

-- Police from the Ministry of Public Security on Friday arrested two young men, Nguyen Hai Duong and Vu Van Tien – both 24, who are suspected of involving in the killing of six member of a family in the southern province of Binh Phuoc on Tuesday. Police are tracking down possible other suspects in the striking murder. 

-- Two Chinese boats scared away and then sank a Vietnamese fishing boat with 11 fishermen on board when the latter was operating in Vietnamese waters off Vietnam’s Hoang Sa (Paracels) archipelago on Thursday evening, local authorities reported.  All the fishermen were rescued by another local fishing ship.

-- Three people died and four other were injured when they fell off a scaffold at a construction site of a 17-storey building on Nguyen Van Linh Street in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City, at 6:30 am on Friday, local authorities reported.

-- Anti-drug police in the northern province of Quang Ninh on Friday said they had arrested five people who illegally transported nearly 1.7kg of heroin and methamphetamine, a type of synthetic drug, and about 7,000 tablets of ecstasy, another kind of synthetic drug, from China to the province for sale.

-- Representatives of many businesses, including Japanese-invested enterprises, said at a dialogue with the People’s Committee of the southern province of Binh Duong province on Friday that they have yet receive any notices from relevant authorities about online tax payment procedures, which will be applied in September this year. They also said they are puzzled about this new tax collection method.

-- The Central Power Corporation on Thursday set up a customer service center in the central city of Da Nang to reply to queries from its customers in 13 central provinces and cities, where the total number of users of electricity is about 3.4 million.

-- U.S.’s Serena Williams, the world’s number 1 woman tennis player, will compete with her Spanish rival Garbine Muguruza in the final match of the Wimbledon 2015 women's singles final at 8:00 pm Saturday, July 11 (Vietnam time). The game will come live on Vietnam’s TTTV and TTTV HD channels, and on the U.S.’s Fox Sports channel.
