The blaze inflicted no casualties but burned down 24 stalls of 18 traders, causing a total damage of VND50 billion (US$2.33 million). The fire may have been brought about by a short circuit or carelessly burned incense, authorities said. -- Vietnamese and foreign rescuers have saved one sailor and found the bodies of two others who were among the 19 Philippine crewmembers of the Bahamas-flagged cargo ship Bulk Jupiter that sank off the southern Vietnamese coastal city of Vung Tau on Friday morning while on the way from Malaysia to China, the Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center reported the same day. Rescue efforts to search for the 16 remaining sailors are underway.  -- An earth quake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale rocked Bac Tra My District in the central province of Quang Nam at 9:43 am on Friday. This was the latest in a series of quakes that had hit the district, where the Song Tranh 2 Hydropower Plant is located, over the past several years, with the strongest earthquake since 1957 occurring on November 15, 2012, measuring 4.7 on the Richter scale. -- The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has said it will start a campaign on January 5 to detect and punish operators of illegally operating taxis including those from Uber, an American taxi app service that offers low fares, expensive vehicles. -- Police in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on Friday arrested 21-year-old Tran Vu Huy, a third-year student at the Hue University of Science, for using a knife to intimidate the owner of a local silver shop and taking away 10 taels of silvers and a gold necklace. Huy said he committed the robbery as he needed money to pay debts resulting from illegal football betting.Business -- During the first 11 months of 2014, Vietnamese businesses imported nearly 210,000 buffaloes and cows, up about 50 percent compared with the same period of 2013, to meet the increasing demand for imported meat, according to the statistics of the customs authorities.   -- A number of domestic steel manufacturers will shut down in 2015 due to ineffective operations resulting from their low competitiveness, high production cost and backward technology, Pham Chi Cuong, chairman of the Vietnam Steel Association, has warned.Lifestyle

-- About 60,000 tourists, including foreigners, arrived in the southern coastal city of Vung Tau during the first two days of 2015, up about 15 percent compared to the same period last year, according to the Management Board of Vung Tau City Tourist Areas. Sports-- The Spanish Football Championship will resume after a winter break at 10:00 pm Saturday, January 3 (Vietnam time), with a match between Atlético Madrid and Levante in the 17th round of the tournament. Atlético now rank third while their rivals are second last in the rankings.
