Politics

-- Nguyen Thien Nhan was re-elected as chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnamese Fatherland Front during the closing session of a VFF meeting on Saturday.

-- A Vietnamese delegation on Saturday attended the ongoing 27th annual session of the United Nations Human Rights Council, marking the first presence of the country’s representatives at the gathering since its membership last year. 

Society

-- According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, the 1.4km section of Pham Van Dong Street crossing Street 20 and Hiep Binh Street in Thu Duc District will be open to traffic with 10 lanes starting 9:00 am on Sunday. So far a total length of 6.6km of the street has been open to traffic, relieving traffic jams on Kha Van Can Street and reducing traffic volume on Hanoi Highway.

-- On Saturday, a man in Hue City in central Thua Thien Hue Province kidnapped his girlfriend at knifepoint for four hours. The victim was then rescued by the police and the kidnapper has been released on bail.

-- At the Saturday session of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee, Minister of Education and Training affirmed that his ministry will be in charge of compiling a set of textbooks. The delegates also proposed that some VND800 billion (US$37.65 million) will be allocated for training the textbook compiling board and teachers in localities nationwide.

Business:

-- Vinpearl Joint Stock Co (Vinpearl) will launch the five-star Vinpearl Resort & Villas 1 – a complex combining 500 five-star hotel rooms with 160 luxurious villas – on Hon Tre Island in Nha Trang City, the capital of the coastal province of Khanh Hoa, in April 2015. It is the third luxury resort of Vinpearl after previous successful projects on the island, namely Vinpearl Resort and Vinpearl Luxury.

-- According to Ha Tinh Province’s Department of Planning and Investment, Samsung Group is currently eyeing a $2.5 billion investment in the province’s Vung Ang 3 Thermo-Electricity Plant. Japan’s Mitsubishi Group is also planning to invest the same sum in the province’s Vung Ang 2 Thermo-Electricity Plant.

-- Japan’s Terra Motors business in Vietnam announced the A4000i line, the first product in the Southeast Asian country which wholly runs on electricity on Saturday.  

Sports:

-- Vietnam’s under-19 football team and their recent feats will be featured in a local comic series, “Hoc Vien Bong Da” (The Academy of Football), which will be released on October 6.

-- After the close of the 8th day of the 17th Asian Games Incheon in South Korea, Team Vietnam won a total of 27 medals, including 1 gold. The team currently ranks 14th.

-- On Saturday afternoon, Vietnamese “queen of speed” Vu Thi Huong gained a spot in the final round of the 100m women's race track at the 2014 Asian Games Incheon in South Korea.
