-- A seminar discussing measures to boost the friendship and cooperation between Vietnamese and Cambodian women was held in HCM City on August 24. The first-ever event, co-organised by the Vietnam Women’s Union (VWU) and the Cambodian Women’s Association for Peace and Development (CWAPD), was part of activities to mark the Vietnam-Cambodia Friendship Year 2012 and the 45 th anniversary of bilateral diplomatic ties. Society -- The Supreme People’s Procuracy has prosecuted Nguyen Van Tuyen, 50, former director of the Hoang Anh Shipping Joint Stock Company under Vietnam Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (Vinashin), and Do Dinh Con, 60, former deputy general director of the joint stock company. for embezzlement. Previously, the two men had been sentenced to 16 years and 10 years in prison respectively for “intentionally acting against the State’s economic management regulation and causing serious consequences” in the corruption case at Vinashin. -- A couple and their 8-month baby, of Quang Ngai Province, died in a car accident that occurred yesterday evening in Quang Nam Province. Nguyen Van Nam, 29, of Quang Binh Province, the ring’s leader was sentenced to 9 years in prison while his accomplices received sentences ranging from 2 to 8 years imprisonment. -- Police form the Ministry of Public and Security have cracked down on a transnational gambling ring, arresting 4 gamblers. The ring’s leader was Lam Manh Nhi, 42, of District 5, Ho Chi Minh City, who had organized and managed an online gambling system for gamblers in Vietnam, Cambodia and China. -- Concerned agencies find it hard to control made-in-China food additives in Vietnam, said the Health Ministry’s Food Safety and Hygiene. Chinese food additives were brought into Vietnam through different way and they now account for 30 percent of the total volume of food additives imported into Vietnam, the department said.Business -- The country’s consumer price index (CPI) in August rose 0.63 percent after dropping for two consecutive months. The General Statistics Office (GSO) reported on August 24 that the index has increased to 5.04 percent year on year and 2.86 percent against December 2011. The country’s CPI in the last eight months has now risen 10.41 percent against the same period last year. -- After days of hike following the arrests of prominent bankers at the Asia Commercial Bank, the gold prices in Vietnam have been reduced. Yesterday morning a SJC gold tael was sold for VND43.9 million (US$2,107), a reduction of VND550,000 per tael from the day before. By the end of the day, the price climbed to 44.2 million (US$2,210) since the world gold price had increased. Lifestyle

-- Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and State President Truong Tan Sang visited General Vo Nguyen Giap yesterday on his 102th birthday anniversary (August 25). Meanwhile, a photo exhibition, “General Vo Nguyen Giap and war veterans”, is taking place at the Exhibition Information Center in Hanoi to welcome the General’s birthday. The 102 photos on display express the great gratitude and sentiment of photographer Nguyen Trong Nghi, a wounded veteran and 3rd Generation Agent Orange victim, to the General. These photos were taken by war veteran Nghi from 1999 to 2005. -- The third annual German Film Festival in Vietnam, organized by the Goethe Institute, will be held in six Vietnamese cities and towns from September 6 to October 4 2012. After the overwhelming success of the German Film Festival 2010 and 2011, this year’ event will take place in Hanoi, Hai Phong, Hue, Da Nang, Ho Chi Minh City and, for the first time, Nha Trang. The festival will present ten recent films starring well-known German actors, with themes such as family, identity, love, passion, friendship and responsibility.

Sports -- Top Vietnamese badminton star Nguyen Tien Minh, who is ranked world No 11, has made his way to the semi-final of the Vietnam Open-Yonex Sunrise Cup 2012 in HCM City after defeating his Japanese rival Kento Monota yesterday.
