The President made the statement during his two-day visit to naval units based in Cam Ranh city, the central province of Khanh Hoa, starting on December 27, according to the Vietnam News Agency. In talking with officers of Submarine Brigade 189, the leader asked the Vietnam People’s Navy to continue providing consultancy for the Party, the State and the Ministry of Defense on issues relating to the country’s relations with nations bordering the East Sea, and make all efforts to strongly protect the fatherland’s sea and island sovereignty. He emphasized that the navy force should improve its ability to forecast situations, especially changes in the relations between powerful countries, scams of hostile forces, and thereby making suggestions to the Party and State on necessary actions to be taken. The Navy must fully aware of the Party and the State’s consistent stance on Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa (Paracel) and Truong Sa (Spratly) archipelagoes, as well as the country’s sovereignty, sovereign right and jurisdiction over its waters, exclusive economic zone and continental shelf in accordance with the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and Vietnam’s 2012 Law of the Sea, President Sang said.

Admiral Nguyen Van Hien, Deputy Defense Minister and the Navy’s Commander, informed President Truong Tan Sang about the navy’s recent operations and the current maritime situation in the East Sea.
