-- Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh met separately with Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and Iraqi Foreign Minister Ibrahim Al-Shaiker Al-Jafari on the sidelines of the 17th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Venezuela on Monday. At both meetings, the Vietnamese diplomat expressed Vietnam’s wish to have stronger multifaceted cooperation with the two nations.

-- Lashing rains, possibly followed by floods, are forecast to hit central Vietnam and the Central Highlands starting late Tuesday, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said on Monday.

-- Vietnam’s health minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien and her counterparts from the ten-country Association of Southeast Asian Nations joined an online conference on Monday to discuss the mosquito-born Zika virus, which has hit many parts of the region. Vietnam has so far recorded five cases of Zika infection.

-- Hanoi may ban vehicles that are not registered in the capital city and carry license plates of other provinces from entering its downtown area starting 2021, as part of a master plan to curb traffic congestion from now to 2025 the municipal transport department is seeking feedback on.

-- A 36-year-old Vietnamese man, suspected of HIV infection, has been held for allegedly assaulting a traffic police officer in Hanoi on Monday.

-- As of September 2016, some 500,000 Vietnamese were members of multilevel marketing firms, down 57 percent from 1.16 million people in the same period last year, the Vietnam Competition Authority said Monday.

-- Cdiscount.vn, an online shopping platform operated by Big C Vietnam that was launched in 2014 by its erstwhile owner France’s Casino Group, was officially shut down on Monday, apparently because the new owner, Thailand’s Central Group, has no interest in keeping the site.

-- A proposed subway project in Hanoi has raised concern as one of its entrance and exit ways is located next to the city’s iconic Hoan Kiem Lake.
