-- Vietnam Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on Thursday met with Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying during the former’s two-day working visit to the Special Administrative Region of China to enhance economic ties and seek investment from Hong Kong businesses.

-- Vietnam’s multifaceted Hoang Anh Gia Lai Group, which in May proposed a plan backed by the country’s central bank to restructure parts of its massive debts caused by the group’s loss-making agricultural arm Agrico, may have to sell half of its 40,000-hectare rubber tree farm in Laos to Chinese buyers should the restructuring plan fall through, chairman Doan Nguyen Duc said on Thursday.

-- A VND1,839 billion ($82.1 million) plan to eradicate traffic congestion and flooding in and around Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City has been proposed by the municipal Transport Department, which looks to spend the sum on the expansion of connecting roads and construction of new passes.

-- The fifth annual Vietnam CEO Forum, which gathers business leaders across the country to discuss enhanced connection among Vietnamese businesses, will be held in Ho Chi Minh City at the end of this month, one of the event’s organizers, the Ho Chi Minh City Young Business Association, announced on Thursday.

-- Two 18-year-old Vietnamese men, who were in July sentenced to prison for stealing a loaf of sweetbread and six packs of snacks worth US$2 in total, were on Thursday granted criminal liability exemption by the People’s Court of Ho Chi Minh City after their crime was found to have been caused by hunger and posed little danger to society.

-- Four Vietnamese fishermen, who were stuck in China for nearly two months since late July as one of the crew members was receiving emergency treatment for his injury there, have returned home safely on Thursday, with all their medical expenses and air tickets covered by the Consular Department under Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

-- As of 7:00 am Thursday, flash floods and landfalls caused by Storm Rai, which swept Vietnam’s central provinces earlier this week, have killed five people, injured 26 others and left ten others still missing, according to the country’s central natural disaster prevention body.

-- Police in the southern province of Dong Nai on Thursday afternoon said its officers who towed a violating car with the female driver still inside was following legal procedures, after the driver on Wednesday threatened to sue the officers for “terrifying” behaviors.

-- Filmmakers, actors, and actresses from more than 40 countries will gather in Hanoi later this year to attend the fourth Hanoi International Film Festival (HANIFF), which runs from November 1-5 and will feature unique outdoor film screening sessions and fashion shows, the festival’s organizer Vietnam Cinema Department announced on Thursday.
