Politics:

-- Transport minister Dinh La Thang instructed his relevant authorities to investigate the mismanagement in low-quality road projects across the nation after the surface of sections of national highways has become downgraded soon after construction.

-- Legal experts attending a conference on administrative management held by the National Assembly yesterday in Hanoi suggested building ‘open regulations’ to facilitate the establishment of specific administrative units as in islands, in big cities, and in regions.

-- On the occasion of the foundation of the police forces of Vietnam on August 19, Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong stressed the forces to ‘focus on their main duty of keeping national securities and stability in any circumstance’.

Society:

-- Authorities of the central highland province of Lam Dong have announced that they fined three firms for producing contaminated tea VND30 million (US$1,400). The companies name Hong Thoai, Ngoc Dung, and Dang Gia.

-- Le Hoang Quan, chairman of the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City, has instructed local police to start investigation into the rings of illegal house building, especially in Binh Chanh District.

-- Locals in the coastal communes Binh Chau and Binh Phu of the Binh Son District, Quang Ngai Province have been in the rush of diving for antiques after an ancient ship carrying ceramic items of the 17th century was found days ago. It is just 20m from the coast and 2m under the seabed.

-- Three health staffs who have recently denounced the multiplication of medical tests at the Hoai Duc General Hospital in Hanoi were gifted each VND6 million ($288) and a bouquet by an elderly person and a local newspaper to show respect towards the courage of the staffs.

-- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has suggested the Ministry of Information and Communications to tighten management on the costs of international phone calls and the roaming cost of international calls to Vietnam, and to further manage the free services of communications on the internet.

-- 23 former State officials of Long Xuyen town came before the An Giang court as of yesterday for their dereliction of duty that causes serious consequence, and violations in land management. The court is planned to last till September 4.

-- The Ministry of Industry and Trade and the EU held a ceremony yesterday in Kien Giang Province to grant the certification of the protected trademark of Nước mắm (fish sauce) Phu Quoc in the EU market.

-- A US business delegation of AmCham in Hong Kong arrived in Vietnam yesterday to seek investment opportunities in the nation after the TPP is approved.

-- The State Bank of Vietnam is drafting a regulation on banks’ services of keeping bullion of other agencies or individuals and the keeper is banned from using the gold for mortgage.

-- Thousands of young people, especially men, registered to take part in the Vietnam’s Next Top Model contest in Hanoi this month.

Sports:

-- The top-flight football club Cement Xuan Thanh Saigon has announced to abandon V-League 2013 to protest the decision of the disciplinary unit of the Vietnam Football Federation to deduct the team four points for their lack of sportive determination in competition in a recent match.

-- Vietnamese chess player Le Quang Liem yesterday advanced to the fourth round of the 2013 World Cup in Norway after beating the world’s number 4 Alexander Grischuk of Russia. Liem becomes the first Vietnamese player entering the fourth round of the tournament.
