Police in the northern city of Hai Phong have arrested a local man on charges of trading in drugs and growing marijuana trees at his house in the city.

>> Man grows 35 marijuana plants at home The police in Hai Phong’s Le Chan District said Thursday that they had nabbed Do Hai Nam, 38, after catching him in the act of dealing in drugs and planting marijuana trees at home. Nam was captured on Wednesday night when an anti-drug police team, acting on a tip-off, swooped on his four-story house in Du Hang Ward and saw Nam selling drugs to a person. He was also found preparing to use the drugs himself. On searching the house, the team found and seized 23 potted cannabis plants on the third and fourth floors of the house.  Of the plants, 16 were 80-90 cm high and the remaining 12-13 cm high. Nam confessed that he had harvested the plants once. Police officers also discovered and seized a bag containing marijuana seeds, a box with dried marijuana inside, a bag of fresh marijuana leaves, some dried marijuana branches, and many marijuana sticks.  They also confiscated eight bags of methamphetamine, a precision scale, tools for using drugs, and devices for drying and packing marijuana. Nam told the police that he had learned how to grow marijuana plants via some websites. The man said he had used a lighting system together with a heat isolation system and other facilities in his marijuana cultivation. A similar case was uncovered last year when police in District 9, Ho Chi Minh City caught a 35-year-old man growing marijuana trees at home.

At the house on Road No. 4, Phuoc Binh Ward, police officers found 35 marijuana plants, each of which was about 1.5 m tall. Another case happened on August 22, 2012, when police in the southern province of Bac Lieu discovered the large-scale cultivation of marijuana plants in the garden of a farmer in Phuoc Long District, with a total of 1,108 plants being seized.
