Global aquaculture alliance to present lifetime achievement award to Vietnam’s ‘seafood symbol’

Global aquaculture alliance to present lifetime achievement award to Vietnam’s ‘seafood symbol’

The Global Aquaculture Alliance (GAA) is poised to grant a lifetime achievement award to a Vietnamese seafood expert who its executive director describes as “the face of the Vietnamese seafood industry” in Ho Chi Minh City next month.

Dr. Nguyen Huu Dung, vice president of the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), will accept the award on October 8, during the GOAL (Global Outlook on Aquaculture Leadership) 2014 conference, the GAA said Wednesday on its website.

“For many, the face of the Vietnamese seafood industry is Dr. Dung,” GAA executive director Wally Stevens said in a statement.

“He has tirelessly advocated for farmed shrimp and pangasius exports to not only traditional markets, but also to new markets around the world.”

Stevens called Dung “a truly special man,” and added that he is recognized for being “such a devoted ‘salesperson’,” which he believes could not be found in any other country.

Dung has a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Vietnam’s National Fisheries University, and a Ph.D. in mechanical sciences from Lodz Technical University in Poland.

He was the deputy director of the Department for Science and Technology under the erstwhile Ministry of Fisheries from 1984 to 1998.

Dr. Dung is best known for his work with VASEP over more than four decades of working in the seafood industry. He was the association’s general secretary from its establishment in 1998, before being promoted to his current position of vice president.

“During the time Dung was at VASEP, Vietnam’s aquaculture industry has grown tremendously,” the GAA said.

Last year, the Southeast Asian country exported US$6.72 billion worth of seafood, with shrimp and pangasius shipped to a total of 91 and 148 countries, respectively.

“Aquaculture’s role in the diversification of Vietnam’s economy in a mere 30-year span is a testament to the foresight and intuition of Dr. Dung,” Stevens said in the statement.

“Dr. Dung’s passion for aquaculture and his sincere, tireless, heartfelt approach has greatly advanced the image of Vietnam, and of aquaculture in general,” said GAA president George Chamberlain.

“We’re thrilled to recognize Dr. Dung with the Lifetime Achievement Award at GOAL 2014.”

The GAA’s GOAL 2014 will run from October 7 to 10. This is the first time since 2005 that the annual event has been scheduled to take place in Vietnam, according to the GAA.

With “Celebrating Leadership” as its theme, the event will be attended by a cross-section of representatives from the seafood industry, retail and foodservice, government, academia, the investment and NGO community, and will feature more than 50 speakers from around the world.
