Cambodian airline’s Boeing abandoned for decade in Hanoi to be auctioned

Cambodian airline’s Boeing abandoned for decade in Hanoi to be auctioned

Saturday, January 14, 2017, 13:57 GMT+7

The fate of a Boeing of a now-defunct Cambodian carrier deserted at Noi Bai International Airport for nearly a decade has been decided, as the Vietnamese government acquired the full ownership of the airplane.

The Boeing B727-200, belonging to the erstwhile Royal Khmer Airlines (RKA), has been abandoned at the Hanoi airport since May 1, 2007 due to technical problems.

Officials of the Vietnamese airport have repeatedly tried to contact representatives of the Cambodian airline to take the plane back home, but were never replied.

On November 11, 2014, the Cambodian State Secretariat of Civil Aviation notified Vietnam’s aviation authorities that the RKA’s air operator's certificate, the approval granted by a national aviation authority to an aircraft operator to allow it to use aircraft for commercial purpose, had been revoked.

The ill-fated Boeing B727-200 in fact had its aircraft registration removed in October 2008 by Cambodian authorities.

RKA ceased operations in 2007.

The ownership of the abandoned aircraft has been transferred to the Vietnamese government, providing the legal basis for the state to put it on auction, according to the finance ministry.

The proceeds from the auction will be used to cover the accrued amount of parking fee of approximately US$600,000 over the years.
