Doctors at a hospital in central Vietnam have removed from a block of kidney stone that they said is the largest they have ever seen.
The Vietnam-Cuba Dong Hoi Hospital, in the central province of Quang Binh, announced on Wednesday that its doctors had taken a block of stones, 10 cm long and 6 cm wide (see photos), from a kidney of a 51-year-old local woman, P. T. T.
T. was hospitalized as she suffered severe pain in her belly, doctors said,
Doctors at the hospital’s Nephrology-Urinary Surgical Department said that the gravel block is the largest they have ever seen.
They advised that people with a history of kidney stones or bladder stones should be examined ever six-seven months so that any problems can be detected before they become too painful.
Kidney stones (renal lithiasis) are small, hard deposits – made of mineral and acid salts – which form inside the kidneys, doctors said.
Kidney stones are caused by many factors and can affect any part of the urinary tract, from the kidneys to the bladder, they added.
Depending on specific cases, people with kidney stones may need nothing more than to take pain medication and drink lots of water to pass a kidney stone.
In other circumstances, patients need to undergo surgery to have a kidney removed, doctors said.
