The U.S. Consulate General inaugurated Friday an advising center that is meant to provide Vietnamese students and parents with updated information on educational opportunities in the United States.

The EducationUSA Advising Center will supply comprehensive updates about American schools to all those interested in studying there without charging any cost, Consul General Le Thanh An said in his welcome remarks at the opening ceremony.

Mr. Le said that the center was opened because local students have shown a great interest in U.S. schools but access to information about American education is sometimes hard to find.

He told Tuoitrenews that center staff will offer advice on scholarships, application processes, visa procedures, and financial aid as well. Do Quoc Anh, Director of the Ministry of Education and Training’s Representative Office in the city, expressed his belief that the center will help parents and students find suitable schools in the U.S., and thus save them from falling victim to commission-based agents that may impart inaccurate information.

“[The center] will open up many opportunities for Vietnamese parents and students,” the official said.

Around 15,000 Vietnamese students were studying in the U.S. in the 2010-11 academic year, putting Vietnam among the top ten countries sending students to the North American nation, according to U.S. nonprofit Institute of International Education.
