Briefs of some of leading news stories published Friday (August 16) in Vietnamese newspaper:

Politics:

- The Ho Chi Minh City’s Union of Friendship Organisations in collaboration with the municipal Vietnam-Hungary Friendship Association (HVHFA) on August 15 held a ceremony to mark Hungarian National Day (August 20). Speaking at the event, HVHFA Chairman Le Minh Triet emphasized that the two countries have jointly opened a new page in cooperation and development.

- The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) pledges to help Vietnam complete its national drug control strategy by 2020 with a vision towards 2030. At the reception held by Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Hanoi on August 15, Jeremey Douglas , Regional Representative of the UNODC Office for Southeast Asia and the Pacific applauded Vietnam’s anti-drug and crime prevention achievements, speaking highly of the nation’s collaborative efforts with the office and regional countries.

Society:

- 7-month-old girl Nguyen Nhat A. was diagnosed with…foreskin swelling when being taken to the the Ha Noi-based Central Paediatrics Hospital on August 10 with fever. Tran  Minh Dien, director of the hospital told Tuoi Tre that the incident is not a problem. He said that A.’s fever was caused by virus and the mistake of foreskin swelling diagnosis was just because the computer system was overload.

- On August 15, doctors of the HCMC - based Cho Ray Hospital conducted its second liver  transplant on adults with the help from 13 South Korean counterparts from the ASAN Medical Center. The surgery for H.C.T, 50, from Tan Phu District, was initially success, according to Nguyen Tan Cuong, head of Cho Ray Hospital’s surgery department.

- The Ministry of Science – Technology is preparing a US$500 project titled “Nuclear science and technology center”, said Tran Chi Thanh, director of the Vietnam Atomic Energy Institute. Thanh added Russian government has agreed to loan the project's captial and the center could be built in 2015 in Da Lat.

Business:

- The Vietnamese distributor of the US-made baby formula Abbott has continued to withdraw 3,801 boxes of 4,387 boxes of its Similac Gain Plus Eye-Q products with the lot numbers 2563G53117 and 2676G53117, sold in the 1.7kg cans, following a recent suspicion it could be tainted with the toxic substance clostridium botulinum. Earlier it recalled the 400g and 900g can products with lot numbers including 2564G54114, 2564G54115, 2564G54116, 2564G54117, 2564G54118, 2565G54118, 2565G54119, 2566G54119, 2566G54120, 2567G54120, 2676G54120.

Lifestyle:

- Well-known pianist Anne Chamberlain will come back to perform in Hanoi stage on August 17 and 21. Vietnamese artists including Ho Viet Khoa, Nguyen Thanh Tu and Le Tuan Anh will alos share the stage.

- Da Nang Museum will organize an exhibition titled "The quintessence of Vietnamese Buddhist-themed antiques”  from August 16 to September 16. The event will showcase 150 antiques dating back to the 7th - 20th centuries.
