Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s visit to the Republic of Korea (RoK) wrapped up successfully on Friday with the conclusion of bilateral free trade agreement (FTA) talks, a Vietnamese official has said.

>> RoK leader pledges ODA priority to Vietnam’s projects Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Minh Khoi made the statement the same day when talking with the media about the outcomes of the three-day visit, according to the Vietnam News Agency.   The finalization of the FTA negotiations between the two countries is the most significant success of the premier’s visit to the RoK, Khoi said.

The deal will make it easier for Vietnamese goods to enter the RoK, helping take two-way trade to US$70 billion by 2020, the official said, adding that it will also give an impetus to Korean investment in Vietnam. During his visit, PM Dung met President Park Geun-hye, the Mayor of Busan City, and the Korean business community. During a meeting with the Vietnamese leader, President Park said her country considers Vietnam the top partner in its official development assistance policy.

Both the host and guest agreed that the political trust between the two countries in recent times has created an important foundation to expand and strengthen bilateral ties, contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the Asia-Pacific region. During his stay in the RoK, PM Dung also attended the commemorative summit marking 25 years of ASEAN-RoK dialogue relations. At the summit, the two sides adopted a joint statement describing a vision for the ASEAN-RoK strategic partnership. They also shared a common view on regional and global issues, including the Korean peninsula and regional security. Regarding Vietnam’s role in boosting ties between ASEAN and the RoK, Khoi said the Southeast Asian country is always a bridge between them thanks to its close relation with the East Asian country and its central position in Southeast Asia.
