Grabbing 7 more gold medals, Vietnam remains third on SEA Games table

Vietnamese athletes brought home today seven more gold medals to add to a total of 40 gold medals to rank third on the 28th SEA Games’ table, after the host Singapore with 54 golds and Thailand with 43 golds.

Artistic gymnastics players contributed a big achievement of four gold medals. Women’s boxing follows with two gold medals and the other gold from athletics.

Dinh Phuong Thanh won two gold medals in men’s horizontal bar and men’s parallel bars.

His compatriot Le Thanh Tung won the men’s vault and Phan Thi Ha Thanh in women’s beam. This is the third gold medal of Ha Thanh at this tournament, after her victories in the women’s individual all-round on June 8 and the women’s vault on June 9.

Two gold medals from women’s boxing were contributed by Le Thi Bang in women’s 54kg and Nguyen Thi Yen in women’s 51kg.

Not only winning the women’s 400m hurdles, Nguyen Thi Huyen broke SEA Games record for the result of 56.15 seconds. Huyen was followed by the Singaporean Prasad Dipna Lim at 59.24 seconds.

Late yesterday, Vietnam’s iconic swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien brought home two more gold medals in women’s 200m butterfly and 200m freestyle. It adds to her personal achievements of six gold medals and seven times of breaking records at this SEA Games.

Other Vietnamese athletes who qualify for final matches today evening include Hoang Quy Phuoc in men’s 50m butterfly, Lam Quang Nhat men’s 1,500m freestyle, Nguyen Thi Anh Vien in women’s 400m freestyle, and Tran Duy Khoi in men’s 200m individual medley.

In athletics events, Nguyen Thi Truc Mai and Bui Thi Thu Thao will play their finals in women’s long jump, Do Quoc Luat and Nguyen Van Lai in men’s 10,000m, Bui Thi Xuan in women’s javelin throw, Vu Thi Ly and Do Thi Thao in women’s 800m, Duong Van Thai and Le Thanh Hung in men’s 800m, Quach Thi Lan and Nguyen Thi Oanh in women’s 200m, and Le Trong Hinh in men’s 200m.

Truong Dinh Hoang will take on Khankhokkhruea Aphisit of Thailand in the final bout of men’s 75kg boxing today evening.

Hoang Quang Trung, Duong Thi Anh Nguyet, Nguyen Thi Thu Ha, and Nguyen Thi Thuy advance to the finals of pencak silat.

The 28th SEA Games will last till June 16 in Singapore.
