Three first graders were found dead in a canal in the Mekong Delta province of Long An, local authorities announced on Friday.
Le Van Loi, chairman of the People’s Committee of Tan Tay Ward in Thanh Hoa District, Long An, said that a tragic case of drowning had occurred in the ward.
The three 7-year-old victims, Nguyen Phu Thinh, Nguyen Quoc Thinh, and Nguyen Minh Khang, had gone missing after hanging out with each other earlier the same day.
The victims’ families set out to look for the boys and found their bicycles and clothes left on the bank of a local canal.
Their bodies were found at the bottom of the canal, and an autopsy by the Forensic Division of Long An Police later concluded that the boys had died from drowning.
Phu Thinh and Quoc Thinh were the twins of Nguyen Thanh Hai, chairman of the Tan Tay Ward Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, while Khang was born to a poverty-stricken family and was living with his grandparents.
Local authorities and education officials have visited and commiserated with the victims’ families.
