A motorcyclist is under investigation after slamming into a group of traffic police officers on a highway in central Thua Thien-Hue Province on Tuesday, injuring one who later died in the hospital.

The man was apparently speeding while under the influence of narcotics, according to Brigadier Phan Van Minh, chief of staff of Thua Thien-Hue Police, who announced the initial investigation results on Wednesday.

According to police reports, a group of four provincial traffic officers were on duty at around 3:45 pm on Tuesday on the National Route 1A when they spotted a speeding motorcyclist.

After signaling the driver to pull over for a paper check, the motorcyclist appeared to speed up and head directly into the group of officers.

The high-speed hit left Sergeant Vo Duy Khanh, 29, badly injured, while the driver himself received minor injuries from the impact.

Khanh succumbed to his injuries the next morning in the hospital.

The speeding motorcyclist was later identified as Nguyen Ngoc Chien, 26, a resident of neighboring Quang Tri Province.

Drug tests showed that Chien had been under the influence of narcotics at the time of the accident.

The provincial police have demanded that local investigative units proceed with care and objectivity to ensure that those responsible are justly penalized under the law, according to Brigadier Phan Van Minh.

“For the time being, the provincial police will support Khanh’s family in organizing the funeral,” Minh said. “We have also directed relevant units to move ahead with recognizing Khanh as an officer who died on duty.”
