Hundreds of teachers in the northern Vietnamese province of Quang Ninh were willing to donate their blood in an effort to rescue a student who had fallen off the fourth floor of his school.
The teachers, along with students and other donors in the province, have lined up and waited for their blood test, hoping that their blood type would match the young boy.
The victim was N.C.M., a sixth grade student Tran Quoc Toan Middle School in Ha Long City, who accidentally tripped and fell off his school’s fourth floor while playing with his friends during break time on Tuesday morning.
M. was immediately brought to the Quang Ninh General Hospital with lung and spleen contusion and severe blood loss brought about by the accident.
Doctors at the infirmary agreed that an emergency surgery be carried out to save the victim, requiring a large volume of blood transfusion.
M.’s blood type was AB, which was considered rare as the hospital only has six units of it.
Upon receiving the notice from the infirmary, managers of Tran Quoc Toan School called on all teachers and students at the school to donate their blood for the boy.
“Some teachers skipped their lunch and rushed to the hospital as soon as they heard the news,” Pham Thi Bich Ngoc, vice-principal of the facility, said.
The situation was also shared on social media to call for assistance from local blood donation organizations.
Over 200 people had gathered at the hospital to take blood tests in the afternoon of the same day, most of whom were teachers from Tran Quoc Toan and nearby schools.
Among them, eight people had the matching blood type, which was enough to supply blood for the surgery.
Despite the admirable efforts, doctors could not save M. as his injuries were too serious.
The boy passed away at 4:30 pm the same day.
“It was a huge loss for our school,” Ngoc said, before expressing her appreciation for the people who were willing to help the young student.
