A man has died of apparent heatstroke while he was walking his motorbike, which had a flat tire, under the scorching sun in the northern province of Hai Duong on Tuesday.

The victim, 62-year-old Vo Hong Han, first fainted and then died on the street shortly after at around 1:45 pm, while temperatures outside hit nearly 40 degrees Celsius.

Han was a resident of nearby Quang Ninh Province, Tran Van Du, deputy chairman of the Cong Hoa Commune in Hai Duong’s Kim Thanh District, where the man passed, confirmed later the same day.

“The blistering sun, in combination with the baking hot road, which would have been well above 50 degrees Celsius at the time, may have aggravated the man’s heart disease and led to his fatal stroke,” Du added.

The victim’s family has arrived from Quang Ninh to take his body home for the funeral.

One family member said they had tried to stop Han when he left the house for Hai Duong early in the morning to buy ducks, citing his heart disease, but he had ignored the advice.

Han’s is the latest case of people succumbing to heatstroke during the recent extreme weather in northern Vietnam.

Two other fatalities have been recorded in Hanoi and Tuyen Quang Province, while many others have been hospitalized with symptoms including nausea, unconsciousness, high fever, dizziness, seizure and general unresponsiveness after extended exposure to the sweltering heat.

Fortunately for residents, the extreme heat wave, which began in the middle of last week with temperatures reaching well above 40 degrees Celsius, came to an end on Tuesday afternoon, with most mountainous provinces and Hanoi experiencing heavy rainfall.
