Three drunken men have broken into a reservoir in the south-central province of Phu Yen and opened the valve to release water into the nearby sugarcane crops, flooding the entire area, police said Friday.

With water flowing out of the Suoi Vuc reservoir for the entire night, nearly 20 hectares of crops of locals have been completely inundated and destroyed, Nguyen Quang Tuyen, deputy chief of the district police unit, said.

The incident took place on Wednesday’s night, when three local men managed to get inside the reservoir and accessed the switch to open the valve, according to officers.

The unexpected water released was only detected at the dawn the following day, when the nearby sugarcane crops had already been flooded.

Police said they had identified the three culprits and are working with them, while refusing to disclose their names.
