Vietnam and Turkey have agreed to push forward their cooperation and strive for US$4 billion worth of bilateral trade turnover by 2020.

Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yildirim joined talks with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Xuan Phuc in Hanoi on Wednesday, as part of his visit to Vietnam from August 22 to 24.

According to Vietnam’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the two heads of government discussed several measures to tighten the two countries’ relationship during their conversation.

Both parties praised the results of the two countries’ Joint Committee’s seventh meeting in July, highlighting the two governments’ commitment to raise two-way trade to $4 billion by 2020.

PM Yildirim suggested that the two sides consider cooperation possibilities in the defense industry.

The two leaders agreed on the enhancement of cooperation in transportation, especially aviation and maritime affiliation, science and technology, culture and education, security and defense, and diplomacy.

PM Phuc hoped that via this visit, enterprises of Vietnam and Turkey will have a chance to boost the trade of goods and investment, while people-to-people exchange and tourism between the two countries will also be cemented.

He asked Turkey to soon recognize Vietnam’s market economy, and remove a number of taxes on Vietnamese products such as footwear, fiber, belts, air conditioners, and cellphones.

Regarding the situation in the East Vietnam Sea, the Turkish premier expressed his support for Vietnam’s efforts to maintain stability in the region and resolve disputes using peaceful measures in accordance with international law.

Following their talks, the two leaders witnessed the signing of cooperative agreements in various fields.
