Grande broke fans’ hearts via an Instagram Stories post, angering some for her alleged disrespect

Just hours before her much-awaited Ho Chi Minh City concert on Wednesday, U.S. singer Ariana Grande devastated fans by canceling the show due to “some health problems.”

The Dangerous Woman Tour was scheduled to make a stop on Wednesday night at Quan Khu 7 Stadium, hosting fans who shelled out anywhere between VND750,000 (US$33) and VND15 million ($660) per ticket.

However, at around 3:00 pm, Grande took to Instagram to break the news to her “babes in Vietnam” that while she was already in the country and excited to perform, “my doctor won’t allow me to do the show for you tonight.”

“I apologize from the bottom of my heart but I’m really dealing with some health problems at the moment,” the Instagram Stories post read.

At the end of her post, Grande promised to “make it up to you in the future.”

Aside from the Instagram Stories, a type of post which disappears after 24 hours, Grande failed to mention the cancelation on either her verified Facebook or Instagram accounts.

At 4:20 pm the same day, Pulse Active, the show’s organizer, made a more formal announcement, in both Vietnamese and English, on its Facebook page.

“We regret to inform you that Ariana Grande, who arrived in Vietnam yesterday for a show in Ho Chi Minh City, will not be able to perform tonight due to an illness,” the post reads.

“She has been suffering for the past week and has been advised by doctors to rest again. She has sent her deepest regrets to her loving Vietnamese fans and promises to make it up to them in the future.”

Cause of cancelation doubted

The unexpected show cancelation has provoked mixed feelings among local fans and the media.

Some shocked supporters expressed sadness at the idea that their idol is suffering from an illness, while others doubted the singer’s condition.

‘Conspiracy theories’ quickly emerged that the show, given its exorbitant prices, failed to meet sales expectations, forcing Grande to cancel rather than perform for a barely filled stadium.

Others expressed anger at Grande’s choice to use such an informal medium to announce the cancelation, calling it disrespectful.

Sources said the singer was suffering a fever of 42 degrees Celsius, but it is almost impossible to verify her health conditions at the moment.

“Today has been a tough day for all of us, we too were surprised when we received the unexpected news of the cancelation of Ariana Grande’s show,” Pulse Active said in a separate Facebook post later on Wednesday, apparently addressing fury and doubt from local fans.

The company claims that it was “as affected as all of you [Ariana Grande] fans” by the unexpected cancelation.

Pulse Active said a refund process will begin within the following days, and asked those who booked tickets to remain patient while the company works with ticketbox.vn, the official ticket retailer, to implement the refund procedure.

Ariana Grande kicked off her 36-stop Dangerous Woman World Tour in February with stops in big U.S. cities such as Los Angeles, New York, and Miami.

Vietnam is among four Southeast Asian stops of the tour, including Thailand, the Philippines, and Singapore.
