A fruit exporter in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong that was caught soaking a huge amount of durians in ripening agents late last month has been handed a hefty five and a four-month suspension.

Nghiep Xuan Import Export Co Ltd., located in Dak Nia Commune, Gia Nghia Town, was fined VND60 million (US$2,640) and forced to temporarily shut down for four months starting from October 3 for violating food safety regulations on Friday.

In late September, local police raided the facility and found 11 metric tons of durians being soaked in chemicals of various kinds in order to give the fruits a better appearance and facilitate their ripening process.

The seized chemicals used by the facility are not allowed to use for food processing, and the act of soaking the fruits was subsequently deemed illegal.

Along with the fine and four-month suspension, the fruit facility has also been ordered to destroy all the chemically soaked durians.

Earlier in September, a wholesaler in Kon Tom Province, also located in Vietnam’s Central Highlands, was caught red-handed soaking the durians with ripening chemicals.
