Da Nang becomes even more magnificent on young photographer’s camera phone
Thanh Minh conveys the love for his hometown through photography.

At 23, Thanh Minh has made a name for himself as the ‘best phone photographer’ in Da Nang, considered among the best places to live in the Southeast Asian country.

The young photographer’s Instagram is filled with captivating images of his hometown.

His 2,000 followers would be amazed to find out the photos were not taken with a professional camera.

Minh uses the discontinued Nokia Lumia 1020.

With five years of involvement in photography, Minh has noticed a shift in Da Nang’s landscape, with the rise of new bridges, apartment blocks, international hospitals, and youth centers.

Flipping through his photos, one can easily see all these changes come alive.

“The dynamism of the city is not about the growing traffic, but the actual efforts the city is making to renew itself every day,” Minh said.

He does not set up a tight schedule for his photo trips.

Indeed, he ‘grabs his phone and goes’ each morning, come bright sky or overcast, sunshine or rain.

He pulls out the Lumia and shoots whenever emotion strikes.

“All will be gone. It’s the moments that stay.” Minh said.

“I photograph my hometown with all my heart. Most of the pictures were taken while I was strolling around the city or having a cup of coffee.

"They remind us of a vibrant past with all the highs and lows. I have found my passion, and I will nurture it.”

The young man notes the special bond he has with his dearest city, saying how fortunate he is to have captured so many precious moments.

“This is my favorite: there was no pre-arrangement. The scene features life in its most peaceful manner on an early morning, with both adults and children in frame. Life is complicated enough: why don’t we just slow down a bit?”

“The sea changes its color every season. The tide of the Han River comes and goes every day. I wish to keep all these moments.”

Photography and cycling are Minh’s leisure activities.

The phone photographer had to bask in the rain for this photo. “After the rain comes the glamor of the city, of modernity and antiquity.”

“Shooting from the 20th floor was a nice experience. As seen from up here, Da Nang simply takes your breath away. The whole of the Han River comes into your view, with four glistening bridges and the active nightlife.”

“Doing what you love is freedom. Loving what you do is happiness. It’s great for me to have the best of both words.”
