Rehearsal for General Giap’s funeral conducted

A rehearsal of the State funeral for the late General Vo Nguyen Giap was conducted in Hanoi and Quang Binh yesterday while people in many locations have set up altars to pay respect for the deceased.

Accordingly, at 9 am, a group of 26 cars, including a car for tugging the hearse that is followed by a 122 mm howitzer, left the national funeral house to the house of the late General’s family and then to Noi Bai airport. Meanwhile, Vietnam Airlines (VNA) staffs and a special team of the State Funeral Committee conducted a rehearsal of transportation of the remains of General Vo Nguyen Giap into and off a special civil aircraft at the airport. As planned, VNA will use an ATR 72 aircraft to carry the coffin of the late General and an Airbus A321 for the deceased’s family and the funeral organizing board. The planes are scheduled to land on Dong Hoi Airport in central Quang Binh province, the late General’s native land. Also yesterday, the local People’s Committee of central Quang Binh province carried out preparations for the tribute-paying ceremony.  By yesterday evening, there were 400 delegations registered for attendance of the ceremony. In addition, thousands of residents would also take part in the event, the committee said. As part of the hearesal, at 4:30 pm yesterday a group of cars for the funeral sent from HCMC reached the Dong Hoi airport and were handed over to the provincial Military Command. Yesterday also saw preparations stepped up in the Vung Chua-Yen Island in Quang Ninh Commune, Quang Trach District, where the late General will be laid to rest. The road that leads from National Highway 1 to the burial site has been completed basically, while works on three parking lots has also been stepped up.Altars for the late General Meanwhile, people in many provinces and cities have set up altars at their home for the late General. One of these people is Colonel Sai Van The, who lives on 934 Nguyen Kiem, Ward 3, Go Vap District, HCMC, The is a doctor who was member of a special team in charge of preserving the body of President Ho Chi Minh when he died in 1969. Immediately after the colonel set up an altar for the late General Giap on Thursday, many people have come to pay tribute to the deceased. Another who did the same as The is Nguyen Thi Luon, who lives 500 meters away from the house of the late General, in Le Thuy District, Quang Binh Province. Luon said, “We local residents consider the General’s death as that of one of our relatives. Therefore, many people have set up their own altar at home to pay respect to him.” Le Thanh Tung, deputy chairman of the District War Veteran Association, said, “The district authorities have set up five altars for locals to pay tribute to the late General, but after the General died, many people here managed to have a photo and a statue of the General and then put them on the altar of their family, as if the late General were a member of their family.”

Schedule for tribute-paying and memorial services

These services are planned to begin at 7 am on October 13 at the National Funeral House, at 5 Tran Thanh Tong, Hanoi and will continue as follows:

- 8:15 am: Casket moving ceremony

- 10 am: Casket reaches the Noi Bai Airport

- 11 am: The aircraft carrying the casket takes off

- 12:25 pm: The plane lands at Dong Hoi Airport in Quang Binh

- 1:30 pm: The burial service begins at the Vung Chua-Yen Island in Quang Dong commune, Quang Trach District

- 5 pm: The burial service ends
