Which international school is right for your child? – Chapter 5: "Lessons without boards" and "classes without walls"

At The Canadian International School (CIS), there are events and creative learning activities every day, every week. There are special and interesting classes that no students want to miss…

Wax Museum

“Living” Wax Museum is an annual activity at CIS to provide an opportunity for students to express their admiration for the famous people in history whom they love and want to learn from their example.

Besides pictures and information that the students research on their own and present at their “booth,” they also dress up as their heroes. They present to visitors about the history and qualities of their characters including Uncle Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam; famous scientists like Marie Curie, Albert Einstein; politicians like Abraham Lincoln, Barack Obama, etc. to compassionate people like Mother Teresa or Helen Keller.

Visual lessons

Let’s visit a history class on Canada – a North American country consisting of 10 provinces and 3 territories. The students re-enact the constitutional conference on proclaiming Canada’s Confederation with all the federal flags and emblems of the provinces along with biographies and portraits of the leaders of the provinces. On the table of delegates, the leaders played by some students sit there while the rest of the class representing the citizens of provinces participated in voting on the confederation of Canada.

In another lesson on the history of ancient Egypt of 11th graders, if a stranger walks into this class, he might be startled at the sight of the mummies on display there. It’s the creative work of the students to help them visualize more specifically a crucial period in the history of ancient Egypt.

These visual and lively lessons have become every day events to teachers and students at CIS, not just in history class but almost all other classes.

Science Fair and Math Fair

Annual Science Fair is an attractive opportunity for students to unleash their passion for science. The future “scientists” stands next to their “booth” and give presentations on their research and demonstrate their conclusion in specific experiments.

Another unique and popular fair to CIS students is the Math Fair where students show their love for mathematics with their research. Coming to the Math Fair, visitors can learn about the history of mathematics from ancient times, get acquainted with the magic of numbers and the current , varied  use of math in real life, etc.

“Art for Action” exhibition

At the end of each school year, the CIS community gets excited about an important annual art event : “Art for Action.” It’s an artistic night with hundreds of colorful paintings, drawings and sculptures, and other works of art by students of all grades put on display at the exhibition. In another hall, visitors are immersed in music or excitedly watching the plays that the students themselves stage and perform.

Field trips

Field trips – or outdoor classes – are always the most popular with students. CIS teachers call them “classes without walls.” Through day and overnight trips, students get to broaden their knowledge in a lively and interesting way that also supports the Character Education in Action program, integrated with practical knowledge about life skills that students hardly get a chance to experience by just sitting in class at school.
