Jail breaker gets 17 years for 31 thefts targeting officials

A Da Nang court has sentenced a 37-year-old man to 17 years in jail for committing 31 thefts targeting office rooms of officials in State agencies nationwide. Actually, he will have to experience 30 years in jail, since he escaped from jail in 2011 after serving two years of his 15-year sentence on the same charge.

The central Da Nang City People’s Court on July 23 gave the sentence to Nguyen Tuan Vu, a native of northern Vinh Phuc Province, and another sentence, seven years in jail, to his accomplice, 34-year-old Nguyen Quoc Phu, of Hanoi.

The two ‘super-thieves’, of whom Vu was the mastermind, successfully carried out 31 thefts in 16 provinces and cities nationwide, including Hanoi, Thanh Hoa, Quang Tri, Quang Binh, Da Nang, Dak Lak, Ninh Thuan, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, , Binh Duong, Vinh Long, Can Tho and Soc Trang, according to the indictment.

These thefts took place from April 16, 2011, when Vu escaped from Hoa Lo Prison in Hanoi, to January 1, 2012, when they were arrested. Phu had been jailed in the same prison and he finished serving his sentence before Vu broke out of the jail.

The two men used a car driven by Phu to travel to and from places where they committed 31 thefts mainly targeting office rooms of officials at State agencies. The total value of stolen assets was estimated to be over VND2 billion (US$96,000).

For example, Vu and Phu took away VND20 million left in the office room of Le Thi Huong, director of the Da Nang City Finance Department. They also stole US$1,000 and VND5 million from the office of Nguyen Thanh Sang, one of Huong’s deputies.  In Quang Binh, the burglars broke into the office of Tu Minh Lien, director of the Asset Auction Center under the provincial Justice Department, and took away gold and money totaling VND232 million. In Quang Nam, the thieves stole an envelope containing VND50 million from the office room of Nguyen Thi Hong Ha, deputy director of the provincial Lottery Ticket Company. They also took away VND50 million from the room of Ngo Quang Truong, deputy director of the Dak Lak Province Department of Labor, Ward Invalids and Social Affairs.
