Nguyen Trong Hy, chairman of VFF which governs local soccer, confirmed the suspension Friday morning, adding it will be valid until police announce their final conclusion on Kien’s alleged wrongdoings.
Kien, considered one of the most powerful figures in Vietnamese soccer now, was captured at home Monday evening following allegations of illegal business activities at three of his companies.
He acts as deputy chairman of the Vietnam Professional Football company (VPF) that runs the nation’s two leading tourneys, V-League and the First Division, where the boss also chairs two participating teams.
Chairman Hy said that VFF has simultaneously asked the clubs to select a substitute for Kien by August 28.
In a related development, VPF has already appointed its CEO Pham Ngoc Vien to take charge of Kien’s duties. Vien is a former VFF general secretary.
A black shadow has fallen on Kien’s two teams, Hanoi Soccer Club in V-League and Hanoi Juniors in the First Division, ever since his unexpected capture.
Their coaches and players have explicitly expressed uncertainty about their future with the clubs, with some even saying point blank they wanted to leave.
