A worker in the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap was found alive on Thursday after being buried under shelves in cold storage for five days.

Mai Thanh Sang, 23, was reported trapped under collapsed shelves in the cold storage of the Van Y JSC, a large grocery store in Thanh Binh District at around 5:00 pm on July 19.

After the accident occurred, a number of workers were able to leave the scene while two others, Sang and Tieu Van Tuc, 46, were stuck under the collapsed shelves.

The company immediately mobilized more than 200 staff to find the missing people but could only find Tuc at 11:00 pm the same day.

After being found early this morning, Sang was rushed to Thanh Binh District General Hospital and then transferred to Dong Thap Central General Hospital for treatment.

According to Doctor Ta Tung Lam, director of Dong Thap Central General Hospital, the patient is not in critical condition, although his blood pressure dropped and his legs are bruised from the time spent in freezing temperatures. He can now speak and recognize his relatives.

“This was a lucky escape from death. We are observing him closely so we can administer treatment when needed,” Dr. Lam said.
