-- President pro tempore of the U.S. Senate Patrick Leahy attended a ceremony Saturday to kick off a dioxin-contaminated treatment system at Da Nang airport while he was in the coastal city as part of a five-day visit to Vietnam from April 16.

-- Veteran Vo Nhu Thong inaugurated Sunday a memorial house that commemorates Uncle Ho, or late President Ho Chi Minh, in central Quang Nam Province. Thong spent nearly VND700 million (US$33,019), saved from the veteran pensions of his and his wife’s, on building the venue to show his respect to Uncle Ho.

-- A container truck carrying giant power equipment and weighed more than 100 tons was Sunday found dodging a truck scale near the Ham Kiem Industrial Park in southern Binh Thuan Province. The truck driver later confessed to officials that he was transporting 65 tons more than allowed.

-- The Hanoi Center for Preventive Medicine opened Sunday an inoculation post to provide free-of-charge vaccination against measles for children under 6 at a time when the death toll from measles-related diseases reached 119, according to data from the Vietnamese Ministry of Health.

-- A container truck was passing Le Duc Tho Street, near the My Dinh Stadium, in Hanoi on Sunday afternoon when it suddenly capsized, sending many iron poles weighing dozens of tons each out to the street. Fortunately, there were no casualties.

-- A cargo ship with a loading capacity of 30,000 tons has become the largest international vessel to enter Ho Chi Minh City via Soai Rap River as it docked at the local SPCT port on Saturday. A dredging project is being carried out on Soai Rap River that will enable it to receive larger ships to the southern city through a shorter distance.

-- Tour organizers in HCMC say bookings for the coming five-day national holidays are still available for packages to Phu Quoc Island off the southern province of Kien Giang. The holidays start from April 30 to May 4 on the occasion of the Reunification Day and the International Labor’s Day.

-- The 2014 Hue Festival officially wrapped up its nine days of festive activities with the closing ceremony on Sunday.

-- Pham Van Quyen, once dubbed Vietnam’s golden boy before he was suspended from football for four years over a match-fixing scandal in 2005, announced his retirement at the age of 30 on Sunday. Quyen’s last club, V-League side Vissai Ninh Binh, is now mired in a betting and match-fixing accusation with many of its players under investigation.
