-- Nguyen Danh Duyen, vice general director of the Hanoi branch of state-run Vietnamese electricity giant Vietnam Electricity ensured at a Tuesday meeting that residents in Hanoi will not suffer outages intended to facilitate repairs at a time when temperatures have exceeded 36 degrees Celsius.

-- A raging blaze broke out at around 3:45 pm on Tuesday at a 1,000m² warehouse packed with scrap cloths in Ho Chi Minh City's Binh Chanh District. Over 200 firefighters promptly arrived at the scene in over 20 fire trucks to combat the fire. The inferno was put out at around 7:00 pm the same day.

-- Leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Information and Communications told the media on Tuesday that since the department keeps a better check to stall junk and fraudulent text messages, which has been a perennial grievance for cellphone users, the situation has improved. According to the department, mobile service providers have stalled 256,000 pre-paid subscribers who are proven to have spread such messages.

-- Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung on Tuesday approved a proposal submitted by the People’s Committee of the south-central province of Khanh Hoa for a grant of VND37 billion (US$1.72 million) to help the province combat the raging drought. Kanh Hoa is also to receive another VND29 billion ($1.35 million), which is meant to help farmers buy seedlings for their next crops.

-- The 2014 Vietnam Provincial Governance and Public Administration Performance Index (PAPI) which was announced on Tuesday reveals that corruption and pestering tend to be on the rise among civil servants working in a number of public sectors.

-- Over 10 households in An Lao District, located in the northern city of Hai Phong, have stayed put in their tents and stone hedges and taken turns to keep a watch since Sunday. The move is meant to stop a construction unit from moving on with their work on a viaduct connecting National Highway 10 with Hanoi-Hai Phong Expressway. The construction work has allegedly caused these people's houses to sink and crack seriously.

-- An official of the People’s Committee of the Mekong Delta province of Long An said on Tuesday that a number of agitated residents splashed acid on and assaulted several members of a team who were tasked with implementing a forced site clearance in the neighborhood as part of a project to build an anti-flood dyke system in Thanh Hoa Town, located in Thanh Hoa District. According to a local hospital, two members of the site clearing team got stabbed, while 18 others suffer burns from the spattered acid.

-- At a Tuesday meeting, state-owned VietinBank shareholders reached a consensus on a merger with PG Bank. Following the merger, the new institution will operate under the name of VietinBank.

-- The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport has announced that the Nguyen Hue Pedestrian Street, located in the downtown area, will be put to use on a pilot basis from today to Monday next week. The street is expected to officially open to the public by the end of this month in time for the forthcoming six-day public holiday, and will serve as a pedestrian street on weekend nights first before opening as such on a 24/7 basis later, the project investor said earlier.

-- The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper have just launched the “Mua He Nuoc” (Water Summer) contest and the “Dai Su Nuoc” (Water Ambassadors) program to help raise people’s awareness of frugal consumption of water following the noted success achieved by last year’s program.
