Ho Chi Minh City to hold military parade to celebrate Reunification Day

Tuesday, April 14, 2015, 20:04 GMT+7

A military parade will take place in Ho Chi Minh City on April 30 to mark the 40th anniversary of Reunification Day, according to the national committee on the organization of major anniversaries in 2014-2015.  About 6,200 soldiers, militiamen, and civilians will take part in a parade and a march that will kick off on Le Duan Street, in front of the Reunification Palace at 7:00 am on April 30, the committee said at an international press conference in the city on Monday.   At the same time, a grand meeting will be opened with the participation of about 1,750 people.  These activities will be watched by the country’s top leaders, high-ranking officials of Ho Chi Minh City, international guests, and 100 overseas Vietnamese. The event will be aired live on Vietnam Television, Radio the Voice of Vietnam, and all TV stations of centrally-run provinces and cities. Following the parade and march, a music show will be organized with the performance of over 4,400 artists. Truong Minh Tuan, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, said that 697 foreign reporters have registered for coverage of the meeting, parade, and march in the city. Soldiers taking part in the parade will wear the same military uniforms and use the same military flags of the wings of troops that entered Saigon (the former name of the city) on April 30, 1975, said Truong Trong Nghia, deputy chairman of the Politics General Department of the Vietnam People’s Army. Vietnam was reunified on that date when the U.S.-backed Saigon regime fell. Hua Ngoc Thuan, deputy chairman of the municipal People’s Committee, said that at 9:00 pm on April 30, fireworks will go off at the Bitexco Financial Tower, the city’s highest building, and at seven other locations. The event is part of a range of activities that will be conducted in the city and Hanoi from April 24 to May 1, according to the national committee on the organization of major anniversaries in 2014-2015.
