A groom in north-central Vietnam opted to stray from tradition and take his wife home atop a forklift, winning her surprise but raising eyebrows from local authorities.
The newlyweds, both hailing from Nghe An Province, caused a stir among local Facebook users after a photo showing them sitting happily on a raised fork lift in wedding attire surfaced on the social network on February 8.
According to Vietnamese tradition, the groom should arrive at his bride’s home by car to pick her up and return to his house for the official wedding ceremony.
Shying from tradition, the groom, referred to only as H., 34, was looking for something a bit more extraordinary to intrigue his 21-year-old bride and he knew renting and decorating a fork lift would be an interesting way to do just that.
As seen in the viral photo, the two were lifted above electric wires and local houses, giving them a bird’s eye view of the town.
The forklift bridal carriage sparked mixed responses from the Facebook community, with some expressing their support for the idea and other believing the couple put their lives at risk for a few minutes of fame.
“Look how close they were to the electric wires,” a comment reads. “What if something terrible happened on what should have been the happiest day in the couple’s life?”
One of the groom’s relatives told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper that the newlyweds are happy to see the photo going viral on Facebook and the pair really wanted to attract attention from the community.
However, the authorities of Phu Thanh Commune, where the wedding took place, chose to stay away from social media and instead officially reprimanded the husband and wife for the stunt.
Shortly after their wedding, the newlyweds were invited to the commune administration’s office where they were admonished and reminded that it is just too dangerous to carry a bride home on a fork lift.
